Nothing is finally something exciting

Nothing Phones are for phone haters.

Modern smartphones are a necessary evil for me. I need one, but I don’t like using them. I’m a terrible writer with a phone. If I need to write more than a couple of words, I’ll use a computer.

I’ve had tens of different phones in my life. Back in the day, phones were exciting. Every year they introduced new features and design concepts because technological development was rapid and creative. For example, the Sony Ericsson P800 (in 2004) was one of my favorites. I loved that PDA-style business phone. The Nokia E71 was another superb phone later in 2008. Unfortunately, Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007. Since then, all phones have been boring plain screens. On the software (Android) side, the complexity has increased to the point of insanity.

For the past year, I’ve used the Samsung Galaxy S22 as my daily driver. Unfortunately, its terrible battery life caused issues too many times. I looked through the options and luckily found Nothing phones. Their concept is exactly what I need: a clean and simple phone for someone who want’s to avoid phones. In addition, the engineering style with glyph lights was the final reason for me to change the phone. Nothing reminds me of OnePlus in their good early days.

A few years ago, I had two Nokia (by HMD Global) phones. They were similarly clean vanilla Androids with long software support. Unfortunately, they didn’t deliver what they promised. They didn’t even fix critical bugs. I hope Nothing doesn’t end up like Nokia. I hope they provide the promised software support. I also hope that they introduce only a few phone models (like Apple) and keep them in good shape.
