Having fun with Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II

In 2013, I moved from DSLRs to mirrorless camera. More specifically, to Olympus OM-D E-M5. That model was the first in Olympus OM-Digital lineup. It was a revolutionary camera and no wonder it was voted the “Best Camera of 2021”. Even today I enjoy using it.

Recently I purchased a second-hand OM-D E-M1 Mark II. Professional photographers have began to replace their E-M1s with the new OM-1 by OM System. Hence, I noticed a great opportunity to be able to select one in mint condition.

From the beginning E-M5 was missing some features I needed. In addition, its compactness is a compromise I sometimes suffered, especially when using heavier vintage Canon FD lenses.

Main issues that E-M1 fixes for me:

  • More fun to use
  • Fits hand
  • Fully articulating display (no more tactical mirrors and pillows)
  • Wi-Fi
  • Proper focus peaking
  • Focus stacking
  • More programmable buttons
  • Phase detect AF
  • Pro capture

Otherwise, there isn’t much difference between E-M5 and E-M1 Mark II that I care.

The feeling during photography is the most important thing to me. It must be fun. I don’t publish anything (mostly). I don’t like the feeling I get if I think other people while shooting. Furthermore, I even took a break of a few years because I lost motivation.

A year ago I found the YouTube channel The Photographic Eye by Alex Kilbee. He managed to make me understand better what photography actually is, or can be. He helped me to remember why I got excited about photography 20 years ago.

Why I picked Olympus in 2012? The reason wasn’t technical. When I was a child in ’90s, few relatives had Olympus cameras. I’ve warm memories about those moments. Today I get the same feeling when I use Olympus.

I let other people shoot and publish great photos. I keep experimenting and having fun. Something may be published later.

P.S. The Olympus HLD-9 Power Battery Grip is for sale, as I don’t need it. However, I may change my mind soon…
